12-3-30 timer
Thirty minutes, counted down, with beeps every five. And because most walking pads stop far below a 12 percent incline, the page works out the walk on your pad that matches the same estimated calories.

What 12-3-30 is
12-3-30 is a treadmill walk at a 12 percent incline, 3 mph, for 30 minutes. Lauren Giraldo, who is not a fitness professional, first shared it on YouTube in 2019 and it spread widely on TikTok in 2020, according to the Cleveland Clinic and TODAY. She has said she picked 12 because it was the highest incline on her gym's treadmill, 3 mph because it felt like a brisk walk without running, and 30 minutes on her grandmother's advice. The settings are the whole program.
Why most walking pads cannot do it
Walking pads are built to slide under a desk, so they are low and most of them are flat. On the makers' own spec pages as of November 2026, the WalkingPad A1 Pro lists no incline, the Egofit Walker Pro M1 has a fixed 5 percent incline, and UREVO's SpaceWalk 5L offers 0 to 9 percent, with the taller CyberPad models reaching 14 percent. A 12 percent incline is treadmill territory. PadStride is made by Viral Labs and is not affiliated with any walking pad brand, retailer or app named here.
How the equivalent is computed
The page uses the ACSM walking equation (the same one as the calories calculator): oxygen use per kilogram = 0.1 x speed in m/min + 1.8 x speed x grade + 3.5, with calories per minute = that figure x your weight in kg / 200.
| Setting | Real 12-3-30 | Option A on your pad | Option B on your pad |
|---|---|---|---|
| Incline | 12% | your pad's top incline | your pad's top incline |
| Speed | 3 mph | 3 mph | solved for the same calories |
| Time | 30 minutes | solved for the same calories | 30 minutes |
| METs | about 8.3 | lower | depends on the speed |
For a 155 lb walker, the real 12-3-30 works out to roughly 8.3 METs and about 305 kcal gross. On a flat pad at 3 mph that same energy takes about 75 minutes, which is why the tool also offers a faster 30-minute option and flags it when the required speed is above your pad's limit or above a walking pace.
Heads up
Equal calories is not equal work. A 12 percent hill loads the calves, glutes and lower back in a way a flat belt does not, and it raises heart rate faster. The flat versions are honest energy matches, not the same workout.
Start lower than 12
Experts quoted by TODAY and NBC Los Angeles recommend starting flat (a "0-3-30") or at a low incline and adding a little each week, warning that jumping straight to a steep incline is too much too soon and invites overuse injuries of the calves, Achilles tendons and lower back. The Cleveland Clinic's exercise physiologist suggests trying 5 percent first, or a shorter time. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, joint or balance problems, or are pregnant, talk with your doctor before trying any incline program. Stop if you feel chest pain, dizziness or unusual shortness of breath.
Tip
Keep your hands off the rail or the desk during the session. Leaning on your arms cuts the work your legs do, and the calorie estimate assumes you are carrying your own weight.
Where these facts come from
The origin story and the expert cautions come from Cleveland Clinic Health Essentials (December 2021), TODAY (June 2024, as republished by NBC Los Angeles) and Healthline (December 2024). Pad inclines come from the makers' product pages for the WalkingPad A1 Pro, the Egofit Walker Pro M1 and the UREVO SpaceWalk 5L and CyberPad for Home Pro, read in November 2026. The equation and its speed range are as reproduced in Moore and colleagues, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 2021. Every link is in the 12-3-30 on a walking pad guide.
Questions
What does 12-3-30 mean?
A 12 percent incline, 3 miles per hour, for 30 minutes on a treadmill. The three numbers are the whole workout; there are no intervals or speed changes.
Can I do 12-3-30 on a walking pad?
Not as written, because most walking pads tilt to between 0 and 9 percent. You can walk 3 mph for 30 minutes at whatever incline your pad has, or use the flat-pad equivalent above: a longer walk or a faster pace that lands on the same estimated calories.
How many calories does 12-3-30 burn?
The ACSM walking equation estimates about 305 kcal gross in 30 minutes for a 155 lb walker, roughly 8.3 METs. A 200 lb walker lands near 395. These are estimates from a published formula, not measurements, and they vary with fitness and form.
Is 12-3-30 good for beginners?
It is on the harder side. The Cleveland Clinic's exercise physiologist suggests starting at a flat incline or 5 percent and building up, and sports medicine doctors quoted by TODAY warn that jumping straight to 12 percent risks overuse injuries. Start lower and add incline over weeks.
Do the beeps keep going if my screen locks?
The timer asks the browser to keep the screen awake while it runs, which most phones allow on a page you are actively using. If the screen does lock, the countdown keeps time correctly and catches up when you return, but the beeps may be silenced by the phone.
